129 posts · Joined 2015. #6 · Nov 25, 2020. I own the M4 and have shot the 1301 tactical. The M4 is a tank of a shotgun. Ultra reliable and not that bad in recoil. The 1301 is light as all get out but recoil is light. Like there is no way a shotgun that light should recoil this light. Decided to pick up the gen2 Beretta 1301 tactical. Before testing fully I wanted to take it apart to see about the robust-ness of the system. Definitely about 85% or bit less as robust as my M4 or M2's .... The two must common complaints on the M4 are the LOP & the charging handle, must owners of the 1301 are not concerned with those out of the box. It shoots well and fast, although not noticeably faster unless you are pushing it to the max. The M4 feels more solid and feels better made. Head to head for a long term gun I would take the M4. The M4 feels stronger and robust.

The 1301 (any variant) is the more practical shotgun IMO/E, but for the same $, the M4 is a steal. I have both. I don't have as much time behind the 1301 as the M4 but so far both have been reliable for me. I'm tempted to say the M4 might have the edge over the 1301 since it's been well regarded by military users.Being lighter isn't totally an advantage either. It kicks more, making it less smooth for quick following shots. So, IMHO (if it's worth anything), 1301 is a great shotgun for HD with an excellent value, but it is still not at the same level with M4. The fundamental difference between Benelli M4 and Beretta 1301 is "short stroke vs long stroke" piston systems. After the shotgun is fired, the gas piston strikes the bolt carrier group back to start the cycling process. Benelli M4 uses a simpler short stroke design. There are fewer parts in the bolt carrier group.

It seems that both the 1301 and M4 are designed with the defensive/tactical shooter primarily in mind. Both companies offer models for hunters and clay shooters that are better suited to those tasks. The main difference between the M4 and 1301 seems to be inertia vs. gas within the realm of 3-gun competition and defense. Just my 2 cents.

If you have to navigate tight quarters, like a residential hallway, the TS12 is full foot shorter in OAL than a non-NFA M4 or 1301 or other traditional shotgun. The only real disadvantage is the training time to teach yourself to hit the lever to release the tubes and rotate them when you run one dry.
