There's a photo in my JD book showing a JD-2010 pulling a 14-T that has a No. 1 bale ejector attached that's tossing bales into a fairly large hay wagon (with sides that look to be about 8-ft hgh) that's also being towed by the 2010. On some JD balers, especially with some wear (which a 24T has) the operating rod for the head stop has stretched some and allows the dog to remain in the chamber even after the needles are clear just enough to shear the pin by stopping the head on it's stroke.

I seriously doubt the gears are broken, probably just got jammed and broke the shear bolt. The 346 is a fairly high capacity baler and should be able to take a lot of hay. You should get a genuine JD shear bolt.... or several, don't use a normal bolt. This pulls the needle stop out of the bale case if it is extended. The needle stop is what protects the needles in the event of a failure or occasional occurring anomaly, causing the baler to in effect come out of time.
