Gunsmoke is an American radio and television Western drama series created by director Norman MacDonnell and writer John Meston. The stories take place in and around Dodge City, Kansas, during the settlement of the American West. The central character is lawman Marshal Matt Dillon, played by William Conrad on radio and James Arness on television. Though moving Gunsmoke from Chester to Festus presented challenges, in the long run, it ultimately proved beneficial for its success. Thanks to dedicated cast and crew members as well as Dennis Weaver and Ken Curtis’ talents, Gunsmoke was able to adapt quickly to the ever-evolving television entertainment landscape while maintaining its place as one of television history. Although he appeared on Gunsmoke earlier in other roles, he was first cast as Festus in season 8 episode 13, 12/8/1962 "Us Haggins". His next appearance was Season 9, episode 2 as Kyle Kelly, in "Lover Boy".
