I saw this question come up and I don't recall anyone having any real issues with overheating, however if you would rather be sure not to cause a problem one solution is to get an off-road bumper where the winch is recessed. A failsafe thermostat commonly sticks in the open position which of course would not cause your engine to overheat. That comment made above about failsafe thermostats was just some distracting noise to sift through.
