The Dolphin. This was the sleeper favorite of the trip. I really did not see it coming. I needed a final pick to round out our reservations for the week and wanted to stay in Poipu, so we ended up at the Dolphin. The original in Hanalei is a fish market and doesn’t take reservations, but the one in Poipu is a little more polished.

4. Re: Poipu vs Hanalei Bay. The choice is sort of "apples and oranges". Both are great places to stay but may appeal to different folks. Poipu is a resort community with lots of condo complexes, and several hotels, restaurants and shopping malls. Hanalei is a funky little beach town with restaurants and shops.

You will have to drive to get to the nearest beach.
