If you pick up a shard and it does not update with a quest stage then something was already wrong with the quest. Reading the book would have done nothing basically. Not entirely sure what causes this quest to glitch but it seems that if you find a shard or read the book soon after you leave Helgen the quest will be doable.

I got it done at level 10, used Trader and Chest glitch in Dawnstar, with Faendal to get 50 archery and like 45 speech to level quickly, got some money and items too, used battleaxe for most of quest was alright with a bit higher than level 3 I started quest at, Got 100% trophy's on PS3 and PS4 Skyrim now. 1.For other uses, see Mzulft.
