The boat is light, it has no options other than the console, no fuel tank other than 2 6 gallon portables. <br /><br />What propeller should I use for better fuel consumption and better top end. Re: 1992 Evinrude 88 SPL stalls I've seen the black bits of rubber in carbs, usually on much older engines. The ethanol breaks the hose down and the bits lodge in the small orfices/passages of the carbs on engines up to very early 80's or so. I'm finding this motor, 1989 Evinrude 88 spl, to be a fine runner but awful thirsty. My old 1978 85 was pretty easy on gas, but this one seems to go through a lot more. I'm figuring like 9 gph at 4000 rpm. I'm pushing a 1300 pound lapstrake hull, using a 17" SST prop with WOT of 5400 lightly loaded.

If the motor cranks when you jump it there are a couple of things that it could be, a bad 20 amp fuse, starter solenoid, ignition switch, safety neutral switch, or bad wiring. (I'm assumming the control box is in neutral). The 20 amp fuse is on the motor in a red wire coming off the solenoid. (I would check the fuse first).

With the engine not running and in forward gear I can turn the prop (although with considerable resistance) by hand. I hear what sounds like the rubber bushing rubbing on the thrust washer. Is this normal even if the prop nut is torqued correctly? Thanks
